We work together with Cerrito Azul - an education center for children and young adults with disabilities to minimize the risk of infection with Covid-19.
Over the past 28 years, Jorge Paredes, founder of Cerrito Azul, has adapted four buildings donated by the church and private sources into a primary and secondary school, a workshop and an orphan house. The schools allow more than 120 children with disabilities (autism and down syndrome) stemming from low-income families to receive an education. The orphans’ house is currently home to seven young adults/teenagers (between 15 and 30 years old) with disabilities that live at the Cerrito Azul Center permanently.
In this project, Weltweit e.V. and BluoVerda work together with the staff and children of Cerrito Azul and their families to develop and implement hygiene measures to help prevent the spread of Covid-19. Such efforts include the development of a hygiene protocol (hygiene concept) for Cerrito Azul. For the hygiene protocol, we contacted the Hans-Thoma Schule, a school for children with disabilities in Oberursel, Germany. Dedicated teachers from this school shared their experiences with Cerrito Azul. They inspired them greatly on how a hygiene concept that effectively contains the virus should look like. Ideally, this productive first contact of both schools will develop into a long-lasting partnership.
The information materials developed as part of this project will be made available to other educational institutions looking after children/young adults with learning disabilities. Doing these activities will help bring awareness to proper hygiene measures, allowing children with learning disabilities to also go (back) to school safely.
